Valuable advice: do the exact opposite of what your instincts tell you

Sometimes the obvious thing to do -- hey, milk is too expensive, so let's force the price down to $1/gal by law! -- is actually counterproductive and unwise. That's what economics teaches us.

Same often goes for marketing.

Bill Myers, who's taught me a lot (like how to use Sony Vegas Movie Studio!), recently discussed his experience with Facebook ads.

He ran an experiment.

He published an ad that clearly looked like an ad: beautifully designed, fit perfectly into a Facebook post, and obviously pitching an offer.

Then he ran an ad that just looked like a Facebook post. He linked to his book on Amazon and said hey, if you're interested in X, here's the book for you.

Which one won? The second one, of course, by a mile.

Same goes for email itself. Whose emails get opened more: people who do nothing but pitch, or people who combine a pitch with infotainment?

That may make sense once you hear it, but most people's first instincts are to write emails that say nothing but, "Hey, go get this thing! It's 50% off!"

Now having said all that, let me jump into my pitch.

If you've been putting off starting a website, there's a good case for jumping off the fence today.

Because Bluehost likes me, I can always get you the best deal on web hosting. But today an extra 10% is being taken off even that discounted price.

And if you get hosting through my link, you get nice bonuses -- like free traffic to your new site, and membership in my private mutual-help group.
