The saddest of sad newbie mistakes (other than deleting this email)

Quick lesson: don't always trust your instincts, especially when you're a newbie.

For example:

Last week Seth Young joined me for a live presentation in which he went through the basic steps for generating an income stream online.

He began with niche selection, which is obviously crucial. And he made an excellent, somewhat counterintuitive point about competition:

You might think it's a good idea to enter a niche with little or no competition -- why, you'll have the whole field to yourself!

The problem with that: the reason there's no competition is probably that it's a terrible niche. As Seth put it, there isn't much competition for land in the middle of the desert, for good reason.

When you see competition, that means people are having success in that niche.

He went on to demonstrate how quickly and easily you can start your own blog (which, in turn, can be monetized if you know what you're doing, which nearly all bloggers do not).
