College Democrats prez in trouble

Published: Sun, 10/22/17

In days of yore, the major threat to free speech came from the state and its censorship.

That's no longer the case.

In fact, today it's often government courts that force universities to allow unpopular individuals to speak.

And there's plenty of opposition to free speech there, as we know. Just the other day, the president of the College Democrats at the University of California, Santa Cruz, came under attack for defending the College Republicans' right to speak.

Meanwhile in the private sector, an errant Tweet or even the offhand expression of an unfashionable opinion (usually something the whole world believed just six months earlier) can be enough to cost you your job and your professional reputation.

Of course, according to libertarian theory private institutions may hire or fire as they wish. But that doesn't make this phenomenon any less worth observing (or warning about).

Hence the need for an income stream that doesn't rely on staying in the good graces of insane lunatics.
