It
truly has come to this.
Mark Saltzman, one of the show's writers, has just revealed that he imagined the duo as a gay couple, modeled more or less after his own same-sex relationship at the time.
Saltzman recalls, "I remember
one time a preschooler [in San Francisco] turned to her mum and asked, 'are Bert and Ernie lovers?' and that, coming from a preschooler, was fun."
That, coming from a preschooler, was "fun"?
Even today, I'm pretty sure that's not the first word that would occur to most people.
Sesame Street itself, meanwhile, issued a statement to the effect that Bert and Ernie are best
friends, and that being puppets, they have no sexual orientation.
Presumably it would have been best to avoid the whole controversy.
You know where you WON'T debate whether puppets are gay....
(No, not
the Contra Cruise.)
