First, a story about not a very nice fellow -- author Max Boot.
Ol' Max is living proof that mass media isn't everything.
His book about how sorry he is to ever have
been a Republican, and how bad his former friends are, was boosted by every major media outlet -- and the thing absolutely flopped.
But in general, that kind of exposure has to help, particularly if, unlike Max, you have something people might actually want.
The day my Politically Incorrect Guide to American History launched, I had radio and TV appearances lined up for several days straight.
That first night I was on TV with Sean Hannity -- back when, as you oldsters will recall, his program was "Hannity & Colmes," alongside the late left-liberal Alan Colmes.
Hannity was like an ice man; not a word out of him until the cameras were rolling. Colmes, on the other hand, greeted me as I sat down with, "Welcome, Dr. Woods. I've read your book and found it very interesting."
The next morning I appeared on
the FOX morning show FOX & Friends, and not long after that I was on Joe Scarborough's old nighttime show on MSNBC, Scarborough Country. Pat Buchanan was guest hosting, and he kept me on for two segments -- unheard of for an unknown author.
The book did very well: 12 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list, and three solid months in the Amazon
top 100. I am sure that initial media exposure did wonders for me.
Here's the problem: you can't always get that kind of media.
And in general, you'd be shocked at how many books, whose authors have no idea what to do without major
media help, end up selling about 200 copies. Everyone thinks books sell "millions of copies." Nope.
So what can you do instead?
Well, as I mentioned yesterday, our friend Matt McWilliams released a book this year and had great success with zero mass media. If you observed his book launch, I'm sure you'll agree with me that
it was a masterpiece.
When my next book comes out later this year, you will see me launching it exactly the way Matt did, because that's how, without mass media, I can make a bunch of sales and dough, and also how I can give people an incentive to promote my book themselves.
Watch the replay of Matt's demonstration from yesterday and I guarantee you will walk away with highly valuable insights to make sure your own book launch generates results rather than tumbleweeds:
