I pay my property tax in one lump sum every year.
This year, they sent my check back to me and said that since it hadn't arrived in their office in time, I needed to send them an extra $1,000.
Oh, no blankety-blank way am I doing that.
I had put the check in the mailbox at the post office right down the street from the tax collector. There is zero chance it did not arrive by May 31. The tax office may not have opened it until June 1, but that's not my problem.
So I sent them the original check back and told them: there is no way I am paying you one extra dime. The check did arrive on time. I'm not responsible for how long it takes for someone in your office to open it. You can raid my house, you can throw me in prison, but understand: I am not paying you one more dime.
To be honest, I have no idea what is going to happen next. But I am not making any of this up: I most certainly did mail them that letter.
One thing the Osceola County Tax Collector's office is good for, though: it's closed on weekends, so its huge parking lot is empty. And that's where I took two of my daughters today to start practice
driving.
On the way home I told them: I don't normally work on Saturdays, but I'll be putting together the presentation slides for a session I'm holding with my wonderful readers on Wednesday night.
I explained the whole thing: that
I'll be giving a massively valuable, actionable presentation on how to start a simple online business you'll actually enjoy, and that I'm so sure people who attend will love it that they don't have to pay anything at all unless they do.
It's $0 up front, and if you think it was fantastic you pay the next day. If you think it was no good, just write to tell me (I'll
give specific instructions at the end) and we won't charge you.
(If you know ol' Woods is sure to give a good presentation and you're happy to pay up front, though, I do offer a discount to you good folks.)
Regina, who turns 20 next
week, said, "Wow, Dad, you're really taking a gamble."
I assured her that it wasn't really a gamble, because I plan to give the best, most thorough, most actionable, compelling, strategy-and-secrets-filled presentation I have ever given, and that if after that someone is still unimpressed, well, I did the best I could.
I'm
a good teacher, and this is stuff we all need to know. I hope you'll join me:
