On Labor Day we are supposed to reflect on how organized labor generated so many good results for the working man.

Not true on any level, and I say that as the son of a Teamster.

I have a lengthy section on labor in my book The Church and the Market that explains it all in detail. Whatever gains organized labor gets come at the expense of nonunion labor. And it's actually worse than a zero-sum game because things like union work rules, or keeping people out of trades they've trained for, on net impoverish society.

What made us prosperous, and what made the weekend possible, was capital accumulation. That makes us all more productive, which in turn means more goods, which in turn means more goods per capita. Your pay can command a larger quantity of goods as greater and greater abundance is produced.

Simply organizing people into labor unions isn't going to make Bangladesh rich. It would only make things worse.

Anyway, most of us just sit around on Labor Day without really contemplating any of this.
