It's flattering, though occasionally unnerving, to
know that some of the world's top copywriters receive my email newsletters.
It's like being an amateur chess player and having a grandmaster watch all your games.
I get better and better through practice, though, so at this point I'm perfectly at peace to have anyone in the world read what I write.
At any rate, Bob
Bly is one such copywriter -- "America's best," according to McGraw-Hill -- and not long ago he responded to one of my emails, as he does from time to time.
He never does so for the sake of critiquing my copywriting (I probably have to pay for that!) but because he agrees or takes issue with something I've said.
So a couple of weeks ago, in the context of my writing on
goal-setting, Bob wrote to say that the role of luck cannot be discounted.
I agree that luck is a factor. But I told him: I believe we make our own luck. By surrounding ourselves with the right people and reading and learning the right things and staying on track with our goals we put ourselves in a position to be able to take advantage of opportunities that come our way.
By organizing my life in this way, I also create for myself at least an extra hour every day, and I rather suspect my readers wouldn't mind an extra 30 or so hours per month.
That extra time, in turn, makes me better rested, helps me get more done, and generates more income for me.
So if "luck" should strike, I'm in the right mental and
financial position to take full advantage of it.
We're all doing this, so hop on in with us and let's give our work life, relationships, social life, finances, and health (or anything else we strive to improve) a major boost that our friends will marvel at, though you and I will know the secret:
