Today we headed to the airport with no idea where we were going.

We had an envelope inside of which was information on flight, hotel, rental car, dinner reservations, and activities.

But that envelope was not to be opened until the day of departure (that is, today).

Here's what's going on: I'm hard to shop for, my wife says, so for Christmas she got us a mystery trip from a service called Pack Up + Go. You fill out a questionnaire, set a budget, and they create a vacation for you.

A week in advance they send you the weather forecast at your destination, and again 24 hours in advance.

So we got on the road and while driving, opened the envelope.

It said: You are going to...

...Austin, Texas!

Well, this will be fun. The Land of Michael Malice (and Scott Horton, too).

Malice knows we're coming (apart from my family he was the first person I told), and we're having a meal together.

On the Tom Woods Show I have shared my opinions on the unique entrepreneurial skills of Michael Malice. I've never seen anything like the way he built his audience and makes his living.

But in a way, that's why it's not illustrative: it's so unique to him that I think it's essentially unrepeatable.

What Henry Bingaman talked about in his presentation last week, on the other hand, is -- like Malice's living -- certainly off the beaten path and different from what your high school guidance counselor recommended, but unlike the case of Malice it is widely repeatable. You can do what Henry recommends, and you can start right away.

It would be weird if by 2024 nothing about how we make our livings had changed from 1954, wouldn't it?

It would be doubly weird if, given our technological capabilities now, we couldn't make more comfortable livings, under better conditions, and with more flexibility. Really, stop and think for a minute: isn't that what we expected to happen as time went on?

Well, that future is here, but only for people who want it and seek it out.
