The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams was one of my favorite books as a pre-teen, and adults can enjoy it equally well.

At one point, we learn about a machine that had been built at great expense and that had been thinking and thinking for heaven knows how many years, in order to come up with the Ultimate Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything.

And after all those years of anticipation, when the day came for the answer to be revealed, it turned out to be:

Forty-two.

Say what?

At that moment everyone realized they must not have known what the Ultimate Question really was, so they set about constructing a machine that would come up with the question.

I think about that because right now we really are contemplating the Ultimate Question for your online (or, I suppose, even your offline) business.
