"Books are some of the hardest things in the world
to sell," a publishing executive told me at a book fair in 2005.
Just what I wanted to hear.
Every year there are 200,000 books published.
But: I learned how to make mine stand out.
I've done the same with my online businesses.
I am struggling to resist the "best of times, worst of times" cliche, but that really is true about 2025.
Opportunities galore, yes, but you have to get people's attention.
Say you're a musician. On the one hand, you don't have to deal with a traditional record label anymore. You can go directly to the public. On the other, the
competition for the listener's ear has for that reason never been more intense.
We could go on and on with examples.
So yes, I stick to my insistence that this is the best time to be alive in terms of making a living, and it isn't even close.
But with this caveat: you have to be willing to learn. "If you build it,
they will come" was not meant to be business advice. If you build it and just sit there, nothing happens.
There's nothing automatic about it. If you want to sell something, learn how to do it. Learn how to get eyeballs on you, and keep regular revenue coming in.
As you may recall, I pay The Great Marlon Sanders five figures to come talk to my high-dollar mastermind for a
reason.
And I read everything he writes.
Why?
Because I enjoy reading? Meh.
Because I enjoy winning.
W-I-N-N-I-N-G.
Of the last
five major things I did, three turned out so-so, and two were home runs.
One home run was an idea I got from a member of my mastermind, and the other I got from Marlon.
So when Marlon releases something called Get Sales Now, I'm interested in it. Because I don't just want to scrape by. For the sake of my kids, my wife, and my mental health, I want to win. Big.
