Sometimes you get put in the right place, and other times you put yourself in the right place, but the fact is this: a huge amount of my success has come from being in the right room with the right people.

In 2013, Erik Voorhees and Roger Ver -- names that will be familiar to you Bitcoin people -- took me out for lunch and said: you need to learn about Bitcoin, because it's important and fits in well with our philosophy.

(Now before I continue: the point of the story has nothing to do with Bitcoin per se. So resist the urge to write and tell me that Bitcoin is a Ponzi scheme, a pump-and-dump, whatever it is you want to say. There are many outlets online where you can spread those thoughts to willing recipients. My email inbox, however, is not one of them.)

I was intrigued, but I didn't actually own any Bitcoin until 2015 -- yet when I bought it, I did so almost entirely on the belated basis of that lunch.

Now I get it: Bitcoin is about a lot more than making you wealthy.

But I'm not upset that I bought in at $450ish. That turned out to be rather a good decision.

I made that decision thanks to my willingness to show up when people who knew a lot more than I did had something of value to tell me.

Sometimes it just flat-out pays to be in the room.
