One of the times I hosted the late, great Walter
Williams on the Tom Woods Show, I asked him: does it bother you that you're a Ph.D. economist who is qualified to speak on a wide variety of topics, and yet whenever you're invited onto TV or radio all the host wants to discuss with you is race?
He admitted that that did annoy him a little bit, yes.
Well, I happen to enjoy breaking with the expected questions.
Earlier this year, for example, I invited the great Dave Smith to do a session with my School of Life people, but the rules were: no philosophy, and no politics.
Although the School of Life community isn't solely about business by a long shot (it's health, it's personal finance, it's parenting/homeschooling, it's everything you might need to prosper in a looney-tunes world), there
are obvious lessons we might take from how Dave's star rose so quickly, how he handles hecklers, how he balances work and family, etc.
(If you dislike Dave, please resist the urge to tell me off via email reply. Dave was a groomsman at my wedding. You are not going to change my mind.)
We had a great time, because these were all topics nobody had ever had a chance to ask Dave
about.
Well, we're doing a similar session this coming Tuesday, this time with walking encyclopedia Scott Horton, whom most of you will know.
If you're still not in here with us, let's do something about that, starting with the 11 things I should be charging $500 for, but which I'm giving you as gifts in exchange for trying it out:
