Several years ago one of my podcast guests died
tragically at the age of 56.
I'm speaking of David Longdon, lead vocalist for a little-known but outstanding band called Big Big Train.
When Genesis was searching for a vocalist after the departure of Phil Collins, the decision came down to David, or another guy.
The other guy got it.
That David's band is so little known is
one of the great outrages of the modern world.
I remember exactly where I was when I heard David had died: in the store portion of a Cracker Barrel. From that spot I called my wonderful friend Brad Birzer (professor of history at Hillsdale College), who had interviewed David with me on the Tom Woods Show, to discuss this terrible tragedy.
At any rate, in that interview I asked the great David Longdon (who had to work at a
convenience store to make ends meet, because music didn't generate enough income for -- in my opinion -- the single best vocalist in the business):
You are making some of the best music I have ever heard. Yet most people listen to mediocre three-minute crap on the radio. Does that ever bother you?
His immediate answer: "No, because there's nothing I can do about it.... I don't feel like I'm owed a living, by any particular right or claim on
it."
Wow.
Somehow he was more at peace with the situation than I was!
I could riff on his brilliant answer all day, but for now a short lesson:
People who do think they're owed a living make lousy entrepreneurs.
Instead of grabbing opportunities, they sit around waiting for things to happen to them, for things to be given to them. It's poison.
Meanwhile, people with
ambition pass them by.
Nuts to that.
You're on this list with me, which -- let's be blunt here -- means you're more ambitious than most people.
Well, another one of my podcast guests has, as you know, been running a workshop this week on how to build the kind of membership business I myself run three of, and which
allows me to live on my own terms, ignore the haters, and not worry that next month I'll be broke. (Another benefit: a good membership is AI-proof.)
The third and final installment in that workshop is a full-blown blueprint of exactly how to start and operate a successful membership.
You'll get under the hood of the system that the world's foremost expert on memberships uses
himself and has taught to hundreds of thousands.
It won't take much of your time, but it's the best overview you'll find anywhere.
We all want recurring revenue that helps us not have heart attacks every month.
To get there involves taking a first step.
Here's that step:
