The old man here has gained a bit of a reputation
as a contrarian -- not for the sake of being a contrarian, but because the conventional wisdom on so much is just so wrong.
Still, that skepticism of the establishment has become part of my brand, so to speak.
It so happens that my business partner, Paul Counts, who shares my political views, has also built a reputation as a contrarian, but of a different sort.
Paul's message is: agencies suck.
You hire a marketing agency and before you know it they've got you convinced you need to be spending inordinate amounts of money on the kooky and useless "marketing plan" they've developed for you.
These people couldn't keep their eyes on the ball if their lives depended on it.
They'll have you fruitlessly chasing after inane metrics such as Facebook "likes" -- and by the way, good luck buying groceries with Facebook likes.
Or they try to be the next cool thing: we're the TikTok agency! We're the AI agency! Whatever the new thing is.
As Paul says: if you run into one of these, drop it like a hot potato.
Yes, the technology changes and we need to keep alert to that, but if you're not focused on the fundamentals, on the tried and true, all that chasing after novelty will come to naught.
Well, this week Paul is coming on with me live, and he's going to talk about seven things to grow your business.
You won't get any of this from the agencies. Paul's first
order of business when taking over for a client who's been using an agency is to slash the marketing budget, and then spend the remainder strategically.
That's the kind of approach you can expect to hear in our session.
