If you saw the sums I'm dealing with, you'd laugh
out loud.
But it's all worth it to me.
Not even one human lifetime ago, the little island of St. John -- a United States territory, population 4000 -- didn't even have electricity.
Now it's a thriving little place whose wonderful restaurants and other establishments are no doubt made possible by the many folks who
live on neighboring St. Thomas, who in turn work on St. John.
(Not "St. John's," by the way, which will get the residents rolling their eyes at you; St. John's is in Canada, or Antigua.)
The sights and the beaches are striking and memorable, to say the least, which helps to explain why J. Robert Oppenheimer built a beach house on St. John in the late 1950s, and spent
significant time there until his death in 1967.
For that matter, country musician Kenny Chesney had a home there for years, and celebrities like Kelsey Grammer, Alan Alda, Mel Brooks, Anne Bancroft, and Harrison Ford have been frequent visitors or guests at the Caneel Bay resort on the island.
My wife and I have made an annual visit ourselves for the past five years and have
grown quite fond of the place, so I decided: I'm going to hold one of my mastermind meetings there.
And it's going to be great.
But:
Nothing is cheap on St. John, a tiny island accessible only by ferry.
Want a bag of chips? That'll be $8.99. (That is literally the price.)
Now extrapolate that a bit and you'll get the idea of what I the organizer have faced.
I reserved two large properties, at one of which we'll be holding our meetings (that one has an infinity pool; photos below).
