I'm calling it my Unapproved Library.

I mentioned on my other list that I'll be bringing a few 19th-century books back into print (EPUB editions, at least) that almost nobody will have read, but which people seeking the truth really should read.

Here and there you can find PDF versions of these books, but they're created from old volumes with yellowed pages and a font and character spacing that aren't exactly easy on the eyes (and PDFs are far from ideal for e-readers, as you may know). You wouldn't get more than a chapter through it, I assure you.

I'm going to take these books and release fresh versions of them that people can read on their devices with ease, and I'm going to give them away for free.

Hooray, Woods, you say.

Why, thank you.

But let me tell you something: extracting usable text from a PDF created out of a very old book, using OCR, is an excruciating task, with crazy characters all over the place in the resulting file.

You find yourself wondering: maybe I should have just typed the whole thing in manually, from scratch, rather than deal with this.

But then I realized: modern tech can help me.

I'm running the book through, yes, an AI platform that is going through the text and cross-referencing it with the PDF, and generating a clean version, with zero errors, while I work on other things.

That is a massive benefit to me. I'll bet a lot of people reading this didn't even know the tech that could perform such a task even existed.
