with historian Brion McClanahan, we took on the arguments of Beltway libertarians that while secession may be justifiable in this or that case, we can't support it willy-nilly.
After all, in some cases there may not be sufficient grievances!
To which Brion and I replied:
Who gets to decide, then, if a particular act of secession is justified? The central government?
Doesn't that obviously stack the deck against secession?
Well, duh.
The beauty of secession involves not having to ask anyone's permission.
